3D TV Could Be Hazardous To Your Health

It would seem natural that LG Electronics, the “other guys” of 3D TV, make a big deal about the health risks of active-shutter 3D glasses, particularly the part that involves putting batteries and IR sensors right next to your head and wearing them for prolonged periods of time. They still sell theirs although halting sales of active-shutter panels will probably wait till their film patterned retarder system is perfected. Epileptics everywhere will probably prefer the FPR glasses, since they don’t involve electronic headgear or rapid flashing IR directed at your face (glasses). However, some of the active-shutter glasses fears might be overblown.

Tucked away on the LG company Web sites is a page boldly entitled “3D TV WARNING.” There, you’ll find the following cautions: “Children and teenagers may be more susceptible to health issues associated with viewing 3D TV and should be closely supervised when viewing these images.”; “Pregnant women, the elderly, sufferers of serious medical conditions, those who are sleep deprived or under the influence of alcohol should avoid utilizing the unit’s 3D functionality.”

One more health risk note from the 3D TV warning center: Even if you aren’t drunk, your 3D television may make you appear that way. “Viewing in 3D may cause disorientation for some viewers. Accordingly, DO NOT place your TV television near open stairwells, cables, balconies, or other objects that can be tripped over, run into, knocked down, broken or fallen over.”
